Homemade Popcorn Seasonings

My sister-in-law Jesse gave my family a bunch of homemade popcorn seasonings one Christmas along with the recipes. They are not only delicious on popcorn but also on grits (the savory ones, at least).

For all but the Dorito recipe, mix the ingredients together and store in an airtight container. I made a double batch and put the extra in a bag. Since nutritional yeast comes in flakes, you’ll need to put the Dorito seasoning in a food processor and grind it to a fine powder first.

I had never bought buttermilk or cheese powder before, but I found both at Walmart. Nutritional yeast is also available at Walmart.

How to Season Your Popcorn

Bagged popcorn works all right with the powders, but it can get too salty if you’re using the savory ones. I think these powders taste best when you pop popcorn on the stove in a little oil, add a light amount of melted butter, and toss with a generous amount of seasoning immediately. Too much butter can make the popcorn soggy, but not enough means the powder won’t stick.

As I mentioned before, the savory seasonings are also delicious on grits. Add butter to the grits as normal, then a generous amount of seasoning before stirring it all up. You probably won’t need additional salt.
